I can only speak for myself but I did not like this assignment nor would I use it in any of my classes. While it was less formal and more like a conversation among classmates, it was too time consuming as far as I was concerned. You not only had to read the weekly readings (which were lengthy at times) but then had to read several postings before you could add your own thoughts, comments, ideas, viewpoints, etc. Also, if you signed on toward the end of the assignment, you had to read all of previous postings, which were also lengthy, before you could post your own and receive a reply. I believe the first post on the discussion board had to be in by 12:00 noon on each Saturday in order for the discussions to begin. This delayed my completion of the assignment, especially this week, because Friday afternoon I signed on and was dismayed to see that the first posting was not published as yet. Therefore, I had to sign on several times before I could do my first posting.
As far as using this type of assignment in my classes at New Dorp, would never happen. Most of my students have a short attention span and want to complete their assignments in one sitting - not go back and forth reading their classmates' views. While they may do one posting, they would never reply to another. Also, some would never even do the assignment and therefore, hold up those that would attempt do complete it. As discussed in class several times, there is also an issue of students having access to computers. Many of my students do not this assignment would put a burden on them.
